Denver, Colorado -- Across Colorado citizens will join together in
service projects in Denver and in Washington, D.C. These events are
part of the Call to Service coming from President-Elect Barack Obama,
and they are a fitting human memorial to memory of Martin Luther King,
Jr. Many local Democrats are working through their county parties and
joining with Democrats Work to provide volunteers for food banks,
working at rescue facilities, donating blood and cleaning up the
environment. For example, in Montezuma County, local Democrats are working with an
organization (RENEW) which is in the process of creating a safehouse in
the county. The Montezuma Democratic Party has taken responsibility for
preparing and furnishing the dining area. On Jan. 19, 2009, they will
be calling citizens to ask for contributions of flooring material,
paint, and furniture. "We are proud of the response of Coloradans. Throughout the state they
have dedicated themselves to give of that most precious commodity,
their time," said Pat Waak, Chair of the Colorado Democratic Party. "As
we honor Rev. King, we are stirred to provide more service to our
community in these difficult economic times. I can only say thank you." "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of
comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and
controversy." - Martin Luther King Jr., Strength to Love, 1963. US
black civil rights leader & clergyman (1929 - 1968)
