BECOMING A DELEGATE AT CAUCUS AND ASSEMBLY
Delegates play a critical role in the Democratic Party’s caucus and assembly process. They represent their communities, help decide which candidates advance, and shape the future of the party before the primary election.
Becoming a delegate is one of the most direct ways to make your voice heard as a Democrat.

What is a Delegate?
A delegate is a Democrat elected at a precinct caucus (or at a county assembly) to represent their precinct or district at the next level of the assembly process.
Delegates have a few key duties:
Vote on which candidates advance in the nominating process
Represent their community at county, district, or state assemblies
Help shape the direction and leadership of the Democratic Party
Who Can Become a Delegate?
You can become a delegate if you:
Are a registered Democrat
Live in the precinct you wish to represent
Are registered and affiliated by the caucus registration deadline(22 days before caucus)
Attend your precinct caucus
Pre-registered 16- and 17-year-olds are also eligible to run for and serve as delegates. No prior experience is required.
How to Become a Delegate
1. Attend Your Precinct Caucus
If you are a Colorado Democrat, join your neighbors at caucus and bring a friend! Some counties hold their caucus online and some hold them in person. You can find out where your county is holding caucus here.
2. Run as a Delegate
At your caucus, you will:
Nominate yourself to serve as a delegate, or
Accept a nomination from another caucus participant
Let your Democratic neighbors know why you would like to represent them as a delegate to county assembly.
3. Be Elected by Your Precinct
When elected, you will:
Complete a delegate acceptance form
Receive information about the next level of assembly you’ll attend
Be responsible for representing your precinct at that assembly
What Happens After You’re Elected
You can be elected for one or more types of assembly:
County Assembly
House, Senate, Congressional District Assembly (Some of these assemblies will happen right after your county caucus if the district is contained solely in your county and some will happen later on Zoom)
State Assembly
At each level, delegates:
Vote for their favorite candidate
Help determine who advances to the next stage
May be elected as delegates to a higher-level assembly
What to Expect as a Delegate
Serving as a delegate typically involves:
Attending one or more assemblies (in person or virtually, depending on the assembly)
Receiving phone calls, texts and emails from candidates who would like to get your vote.
Participating in votes and party business
Why Being a Delegate Matters
Delegates are essential to a fair, transparent, and democratic nominating process. Delegates shape the future of the Democratic Party; the party is made by those who show up.
New to the Process? That’s Okay!
First-time delegates are welcome and encouraged!
You do not need to be an expert to serve. County parties and the Colorado Democratic Party provide guidance and resources to help delegates understand their role.
