DENVER — Colorado Democratic Party Chair Shad Murib released the following statement on the passage of Proposition 134:
“Today’s result is painful for transgender students, their families and the teammates who play alongside them. Proposition 134 will require schools and colleges to sort athletes by sex at birth and it leaves it to each school to decide how to check. That invites scrutiny of every student who doesn’t look the way someone expects them to. We opposed it because kids deserve dignity, and because families, schools and coaches are better placed to make these decisions than a statewide mandate.
“To transgender students wondering what this means for their place in Colorado: you belong here. We thank the families and advocates who shared their stories, often at real personal cost. Colorado Democrats will keep standing with them as this law is implemented and challenged, and we will keep working to make sure every student is treated with care and respect.”
