DENVER — Colorado Democrats have won supermajorities in both the state House and Senate after campaigning to lower costs, strengthen public schools and protect personal freedoms.
The results build on Democrats’ work to expand housing options, make health care and child care more affordable, protect reproductive freedom and strengthen gun safety laws. Democrats have also defended school funding and essential services through a difficult state budget. The incoming Democratic caucuses will carry that work into the next legislative session and respond to federal policies that threaten Colorado families.
“This is a victory for everyone who knocked on a door, called a neighbor or stepped up because they wanted something better for Colorado,” said Colorado Democratic Party Chair Shad Murib. “Our candidates gave people a reason to believe their vote could make a difference, and last night it did. We’re proud to celebrate this team. We’ll put the trust voters have given us to work protecting their rights and making it easier to afford a life here.”
“Thank you for placing your trust in Democrats as we lower costs, govern responsibly and fight back against any unlawful federal overreach,” said House Speaker Julie McCluskie. “Democrats win because we get things done. As leaders, we’ve passed laws that improve the lives of Coloradans. In stark contrast to the dysfunction in Washington, we’ve successfully implemented policies that make childcare more affordable and safeguard our water, air and public lands. Colorado Democrats have protected your rights and freedoms, and we’ll always stand up against President Trump to create a brighter future for everyone.”
“Every family deserves some breathing room in their budget and a fair shot at getting ahead,” said House Majority Leader Monica Duran. “That’s what House Democrats are fighting for, and voters chose to keep moving that work forward. To the volunteers who knocked doors, the candidates who stepped up and everyone who voted: Thank you. We’re ready to get back to work for you.”
“We are humbled and honored to have earned the trust of Coloradans across the state,” said Senate President James Coleman. “We take this responsibility seriously and are ready to get to work delivering results for all Colorado families. I look forward to welcoming new members to our caucus and building on the work we’ve done together as we head into the next legislative session.”
“Coloradans made it clear that they trust Democrats to continue fighting for them in the state legislature,” said Senate Majority Leader Robert Rodriguez. “We will keep working hard to lower costs and protect our Colorado way of life. I’m grateful to the voters who put their trust in us and congratulate my colleagues on their victories.”
